Jazmaan wrote me in 2003:

I met Screamin Jay Hawkins in Santa Barbara, California in the mid 1980's at a club where he was performing. I asked him if he would perform "Monkberry moon delight." He refused saying: "I only sang that song once and only because Paul McCartney begged me to do it. Paul wrote that song for me and sent me the demo before he released it on his own LP (Ram). He begged me to make that record so I did it as a favor to him. But I won't ever sing that song again because its a DRUG song and I don't sing no DRUG songs!"

If you listen to Paul McCartney's own recording of "Monkberry moon delight" it's easy to hear that Paul McCartney is doing a Screamin' Jay impression.
