Die Gitarre (griech. κιθάρα, ursprünglich die Kithara, ein leierartiges Instrument) ist ein Musikinstrument aus der Familie der Kastenhalslauten, hinsichtlich der Tonerzeugung ein Saiteninstrument, von der Spieltechnik her ein Zupfinstrument.

Gitarrensolo

Beim Gitarrensolo handelt es sich um einen prominenten Alleingang des Gitarrenspielers, bei welchem er alle nötigen Harmonien und Melodien selbst spielt. Glenn Tipton von Judas Priest sagte 2005: "Die heutige Generation von Rockmusikern betrachtet das Gitarrensolo offenbar als eine Art Todsünde." Wir haben also Glück, in dieser Zeit zu leben, denn früher war das anders. Zwischen Ende der 1960er und Anfang der 1980er Jahre erreichten Gitarristen wie Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Frank Zappa, Michael Schenker, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai und Joe Satriani in gewissen Kreisen einen gottgleichen Status - das berühmteste Zitat dazu ist wohl das Graffiti an einer Londoner Häuserwand um 1966: "Eric Clapton is God."

Jimi Hendrix begründete Ende der 1960er Jahre mit seiner revolutionären Technik die heute noch gültige Definition des elektrischen Gitarrensolos. Ähnlich massgebend waren später nur noch Eddie van Halen mit seinem extravaganten Spiel: beidhändiges Tapping auf dem Griffbrett, dreifache Hochgeschwindigkeits-Picking-Läufe und ähnliche anatomisch eigentlich unmögliche Dinge.

Das schweizerische Magazin Rockstar veröffentlichte im November 2005 eine Liste der "25 besten Gitarrensoli aller Zeiten".
