This weekend, the Elephant Polo Cup, sponsored by Swiss jeweler Cartier and co-organized by the brother-in-law of Britain’s Prince Charles, Mark Shand, will be held in Jaipur, Rajasthan’s capital.

Blue-blooded members of the aristocracy are expected to rub shoulders with politicians and Bollywood celebrities.

A statement by Shand and his co-organizers said they are staging an alternative to the regular elephant polo matches, which use “ankushes” or sharp iron prods to control the animals.

It also aims to highlight the miserable living conditions of India’s captive elephants, he says, but the event has been attacked by activists.

PETA, backed by leading wildlife groups including the Wildlife Protection Society of India, have called on Cartier to drop the event, which will involve 20 of Jaipur’s 100 captive elephants, used to ferry tourists round the city’s sights.

Animal rights workers say throughout the year the pachyderms are treated inhumanely, subjected to beatings and live in confined and squalid conditions, and the polo matches would add to their suffering.

Michèle Roten stammt aus Tann (Gemeinde Dürnten) bei Rüti im Zürcher Oberland, aus einem "sehr bürgerlichen, normalen, gut funktionierenden Elternhaus" und hat eine zwei Jahre ältere Schwester. Nach ihrer Matur sammelte sie Erfahrungen unter anderem beim kurzlebigen Metropol, war dann Chefredakteurin und Verlagsleiterin der Jugendzeitschrift Toaster sowie redaktionelle Mitarbeiterin der Weltwoche, für die sie schon 2002 einen Artikel mit dem Titel "25 Jahre Emma" schrieb - keine Lobeshymne auf Alice Schwarzer.

Seit Anfang 2005 schreibt sie die offenbar ziemlich erfolgreiche, als Studentenkolumne geplante Kolumne "Miss Universum" für Das Magazin von Tagesanzeiger, Berner Zeitung und Basler Zeitung. Aufgrund ihrer bisweilen vulgären Ausdrucksweise gilt sie als Sexjournalistin, allerdings mit schwulem Freund. Zudem spricht sie angeblich auch noch so wie sie schreibt - ausser wenn sie mal im Fernsehen zu sehen ist, da sagt sie dann jeweils nicht so viel, denn eigentlich ist sie doch eher schüchtern und wackelt nervös mit dem übergeschlagenen Bein.

Sie bezeichnet sich selber als Hobbystudentin (Germanistik, Soziologie und Kriminologie) und trieb sich auch eine Weile an der Humboldt Universität Berlin herum, was sie natürlich auch in ihren Kolumnen verarbeitete. Inzwischen muss sie nur noch ihre Lizenziatsarbeit schreiben, um nach all den Jahren als "ewige Redaktionsstudentin des Magazins" endlich ihren Abschluss hinzukriegen.

Im Oktober 2008 soll im Verlag Echtzeit nun eine Sammlung ihrer "Miss Universum"-Kolumnen in Buchform erscheinen (ISBN 978-3905800227).
