- Note: Mike Keneally played a Telecaster through a malfunctioning Twin which resulted in more authentic tone. According to Keneally "Sessions with Jay are always fascinating and fun, and the sessions for this album were especially relaxed and enjoyable, surprisingly so since Jay did the album under pressure (he wanted out of his contract and was forced to deliver this recording)." He also says that Buddy Blue "hated the sound of my guitar parts on the first two Jay albums I did, so having Buddy around for the third kept my slicker tendencies in check." - The title track "Somethin' funny goin' on" was originally released on the 1989 LP THE JACKS ARE WILD (Rounder Records) by Buddy Blue's band The Jacks. "I am the cool" was also recorded by Earl Thomas on his CD EXTRA SOUL (Bizarre / Planet) the same year.

There is nothing in the world that can prepare you for meeting Screamin' Jay Hawkins - it's kind of like having an audience with God, Satan, Muhammad Ali and Zippy the Pinhead all at once. The classic records, film roles and legendary anecdotes of yesteryear fail to do justice to Jay's unearthly sense of humor, imposing physical presence and mind-boggling, one-of-a-kind talent. I had been in awe of Jay and That Voice since hearing "I Put A Spell On You" twenty some-odd years ago, and the opportunity to work with him was an honor, and one of the biggest thrills of my lifetime. The sessions for this album were wild and full of laughter, due to Jay's constant stream of musical blue jokes, tall tales and non sequiturs from outer space. He joked, he jived, he shucked and he SCREAMED, with that ageless baritone still powerful enough to shake the studio's walls. Jay literally pulled some tunes out of his bag that he's written way back in the 50's, the lyrics scrawled out on age-browned, crumpling paper. We all did our best to stay true to the spirit of the music, playing it rough and raw. The result, I think, is one of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' coolest and most ENTERTAINING albums in some time. If you have half as good a time listening to it as we did making it, you're in for a helluva party! God bless Screaming Jay Hawkins - a true American original!
